Flanagan Looks to Expand Salvia Divinorum Ban Beyond Suffolk: Senator John Flanagan (R,C,I- East Northport) sponsored a bill passed in the state senate late last month to expand the ban on sales of the psychoactive herb Salvia divinorum beyond the borders of Suffolk County, where it has been illegal since 2008.

District Defends Contract Proposal: In response to Union President Antoinette Blanck’s statement posted on UTN’s website on Jan. 25, Northport Superintendent Marylou McDermott emphasized her respect for teachers at the Feb. 6 BOE meeting after union members voted down a district-union Memorandum of Agreement for a three-year contract.  Teachers have been working without a contract since July 2010.

Two Northport Police Sergeants Retiring: Northport Police Sergeant Tom Schramm will be retiring in April and Sergeant John Schneider will be retiring next year, Police Commissioner and Trustee Tom Kehoe announced at Tuesday's Northport Board of Trustees meeting. "Two wonderful men who have dedicated their life to the village personally and professionally and we'll miss them."

Spencer Asks County to Cover Remaining Sewer Plant Upgrade Costs: Trustee Henry Tobin and Mayor George Doll recently met with newly elected Suffolk Legislator William "Doc" Spencer and Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito to discuss obtaining additional funding from the County for Northport sewer plant upgrades, Tobin said at the Northport Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday.
