: Construction has began on a renovation project at Walt Whitman Shops, formerly known as Walt Whitman Mall, that will introduce new stores and restaurants to Huntington. Eleven new stores, encompassing a total of 72,000 square feet of additional retail space are planned, according to Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, the mall's owners.

: Nassau, Queens, and Brooklyn were blown away by one little East Northporter with wicked game. 11-year-old Caitlin Kavanaugh once again beat the best girls in her age group in the Island-wide Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition on March 30 after advancing through the Suffolk round earlier in the month.

Custody Fight For Boy Orphaned in Murder-Suicide: A custody battle over the orphaned son of Katie Farrell, who was allegedly killed by East Northport native and ex-boyfriend James Schultz in a brutal murder-suicide, is playing out in St. James, where a local doctor's office has hung a banner supporting keeping the boy with the Farrell family.

Elwood BOE Approves Budget for Vote: The Elwood Board of Education approved a $54,621,025 budget for 2012-2013 at the last BOE meeting, representing a .83 percent increase over the 2011-2012 budget and a $256,631 increase in spending with a 2.12 tax levy increase. The budget will go up for public vote on May 15 from 2-10 p.m. at Elwood Middle School.
