Village Forms Parking Task Force

What spots do you think should be addressed?

Northport Village and the Chamber of Commerce have formed a joint Parking Task Force to address parking issues in the village. Village Trustee and Chamber Member Henry Tobin will head the committee.

"We're going to be looking to see if there's anything we can do in the short term and then identify immediate and long term solutions," said Tobin. "One of the tasks will be to evaluate how much (parking traffic) is generated when and by what uses, how much parking is needed, and in the mean time what we can do."

The committee will be composed of various constituencies who depend upon parking in the village. "Merchants, restaurant owners, organizations such as the farmers market, American Legion, churches, the theater, people representative of special events, and, of course, residents," said Tobin.

The committee's first meeting should be sometime soon.

What parking issues do you think should be addressed around the village? Tell us in the comments.

The northeast corner ow woodside ave and Main Street is extremely dangerous when you come down from woodside. No visibility because of the parking spot in the northeast corner. Before someone gets into a bad accident there I suggest to eliminate the first parking spot in the northeast corner ( by the insurance agency) so that there is visibility when one makes a left or right turn from woodside onto Main Street.

Thats easy. Demolish the old post office and village hall and make a parking lot. Then you can dismantle the Task Force.

Another way to chase more shoppers out of the village if you come up with something ridiculous......

I suppose parking is a problem in the evening because of the theatre and restaurants patrons. Good to learn the issue is being addressed and look forward to developments/ suggestions. imho razing the rear of the PO and retaining only the retail function might be considered. Also perhaps the valet service associated w the theatre be extended to others at some nominal price?

First....... Get certain business owners and their staff to park in a lot, not in front of their business. Second, the angle parking was a nice idea before the SUV's & pick-up truckes got so big that they take up most of the roadway even when parked properly. Lastly, build a several story parking garage in the Scudder Ave lot.

A parking garage is a great idea. I think it should be at least explored for the future not dismissed.

The parking spots in the parking lot by the dock should be re-sized as they are a nightmare to pull in and out of. Perhaps the Main Street parking spots can be moved to run up the middle of the street (cars at an angle facing one another) with the traffic on the sidewalk side - in a limited lane (to keep traffic slow) and use the trolley tracks as a walkway. Northport does not need a multi-tiered parking garage.

I wish people would stop parking on June Ave to access the library! I'm glad they just redid the lot and didn't address how small it is for the amount of traffic the library gets, but overflow is supposed to be in the lot on Laurel... I can barely get into my driveway with how tight the cars are at certain times... Let alone some of the reckless 3 point turns/hit-and-runs I've seen in the last 3 months!

Parkiing garage Tax: All COMMERCIAL, (& rentals with 3 or more apartments) property owners on Woodbine Ave, Bayview Ave, Main St, & Scudder Avenues west of Ocean, Church/Reservoir Avenues. They can add it to the rent. This should get everybody talking.. (lol)

More handicapped spaces with better, easier access to the sidewalks, are badly needed.

How about some of the concern shifts from the people that visit here to shop and eat, to the residents who actually live on Main St, Scudder, Bayview etc. I happen to live on Main St and find it ridiculous at times when I have to pay a ticket becuse I parked in a spot that is close to my home. I know of nobody that has the time to move their car every 2 hours, or the money to put quarters in a machine on a daily basis either. Maybe NPT Resident stickers, something of that nature The residents (taxpayers) should come first! Also, on a side note, I wonder how much money the town makes after 4:30 PM and on Sundays, when so many people don't know that you don't have to pay to park and yet they do.

I WOKE UP SATURDAY MORNING TO FIND A PARKING TICKET ON MY WINDSHIELD,"NO PARKING OVERNIGHT" WAS MY VIOLATION. I HAVE BEEN AT THIS ADDRESS ON MAIN STREET SINCE MARCH 2012, AND HAVE NEVER RECIEIVED A TICKET PRIOR TO THIS. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNS WITHIN 528 FEET OF MY RESIDENCE , SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT OVERNIGHT PARKING. I LIVE ON UPPER MAIN STREET BETWEEN ST. PAULS AND CHURCH STREET...IT'S RESIDENTIAL...THERE ARE NO METERS..I AM FORBIDDEN TO PARK IN FRONT OF MY OWN HOUSE, I AM FORCED TO PARK MY CAR IN A LOT A DISTANCE AWAY..THIS IS INSANE!!!!
