Video: Cow Harbor Warrior Supporter Slams Northport American Legion

Controversy comes to a head as organizations struggle to find common ground.

Cow Harbor Warrior supporter Dan Breen addressed Northport American Legion members Tuesday at Northport Village Hall, saying he was "embarrassed" that the organizations were fighting against each other.

The American Legion should not be concerned over whether the money goes locally or not, argued Breen, as the problems facing injured Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans are universal.

The American Legion has argued that more money from the inaugural Cow Harbor Warriors weekend event, which raised nearly $170,000 last year, should have gone to local wounded veterans. In January, the American Legion began to question the groups finances and continues to demand that the group present them with a full accounting.

The Northport Village Board denied the group permits once again on the grounds that a number of community relations issues remain unresolved and the group would need to obtain a permit from Suffolk County in order to continue their fundraising efforts.

Mayor Doll reasserted that he would also like to see the Cow Harbor Warriors and the American Legion come to some sort of resolution, although lines seemed clearly drawn at the meeting with numerous passionate remarks on both sides.
