Potential Suicide Halts LIRR in Huntington Station

Unidentified 19-year-old male suffers severe injuries after being struck by train; service temporarily suspended during morning commute.

Service on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road was halted early Friday after a train struck a 19-year-old man in Huntington Station, according to an LIRR spokesman.

LIRR Media Liaison Aaron Donovan said the unknown male was struck at 5:02 a.m. by a Westbound train traveling at about 15 mph at the east end of the station.

The victim was transported to Huntington Hospital with a severe right leg injury and a possible broken right clavicle bone, according to Donovan.

Donovan said the incident is being investigated as a possible suicide. 

The incident caused service disruptions during the morning commute along the line. The 9:10 a.m. train from Port Jefferson due in at Hicksville at 10:15 a.m. was cancelled.

All trains on the Port Jefferson Branch have returned to normal operations, according to the LIRR.
