Northport To Hold Public Observance On 9/11

Community leaders, police and fire departments, veterans groups and others will gather to reflect on the tenth anniversary of the darkest day in U.S. history.

Members of the greater Northport community will hold a public observance on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to reflect on one of the darkest days in U.S. history.

The observance called "9/11, Northport Remembers," will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 11 at the bandstand in and feature a keynote address from Ric Bruckenthal. Veteran and  member, Jim Mahoney, and Mayor George Doll will present the opening remarks.  

"The observance will be an opportunity for our community to commemorate those who we lost and those who suffered loss, directly and during the past decade, and to reflect on the sacrifices our nation has made and those we may yet make," said Event Committee Chairman and Village Trustee Henry Tobin.

Musical performances from , the , the , and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Band, Flotilla 22-02 will accent several short, spoken remarks by local religious leaders, veterans, fire and police department members, nonprofit and arts groups, and other members of the greater Northport community. 

The Northport-East Northport Kiwanis Club be distributing small American flags to those in attendance.

"Our community will come together as we traditionally do, to honor those who have made sacrifices on our behalf, and in of support those who have had personal loss," said Mayor Doll.
