Update: Northport Hess Closed For Good?

Hess says the Fort Salonga Road location is closed temporarily for repairs.

Update, 6 p.m. Tuesday
A Hess representative said the company has no plans to close the Northport location and the station is only closed temporarily for repairs to the canopy deck. The location is expected to reopen in a few days.

Northport's Hess gas station has been closed for a while leaving many to wonder if it's gone for good.

The company announced in March that it was moving out of the retail business and closing many of its locations on the east coast, but, by the looks of things, the station may just be doing some repairs.

A damaged overhang that has rusted out can be seen from the road and what looks like replacement panels and plywood are stacked nearby. Some pumps are covered with plastic sheeting.

While the Hess couldn't be reached to comment on the Northport location, it said it would be closing most locations over the next year.

The move may come as bittersweet to Long Islanders who often praise the chain's practice of not charging a different price for gas whether a customers pays with cash or credit card.

At the same time, the chain had played a huge role in the days following Hurricane Sandy, when a gas crisis led to fuel shortages and long lines at pumps. Hess published reports through the days telling residents which stations had gas and which ones were out.

Hess said the divesting of the company's gas station arm is part of a multi-year effort to transform itself into an oil 'exploration and production' firm.

Would you miss Hess? Or are you happy with the other gas stations? Tell us in the comments.
