Northport American Legion to Undergo $1 Million Renovation

Work set to begin in spring.

The Northport American Legion Post 694 is set to undergo a $1 million renovation that would improve accessibility for the aging.

Jim Mahoney, Past Commander and Chairman of the project, said that the renovation will include the installation of an elevator, upgrades to the electrical and heating systems, and a new entrance way off the parking lot.

"Nobody's getting any younger," he said, "so to have an elevator to take them from the parking lot to the meeting room is going to really help out."

The renovation is being funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. North Star Concrete Construction Corp. of Selden will be doing the work, expected to begin this spring.

American Legion operations will be relocated during construction although a location has not yet been determined. This is the first major renovation of the Northport American Legion hall. Construction is expected to last about four months.
