Jericho Turnpike Named Suffolk's Deadliest Road for Pedestrians

In the past three years, 11 people have died while walking on Route 25.

Jericho Turnpike is now the deadliest road in Suffolk County for pedestrians, according to a recent safety report. Huntington's Route 110 was named the second most deadly.

Jericho Turnpike was the place of 11 pedestrian deaths between 2009 and 2011, according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing car dependency, which used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

The road, which stretches through East Northport and Elwood, is ranked third overall as the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the Tri-State area, up six spots from last year's study. Nassau County's Hempstead Turnpike took first, with 14 deaths between 2009 and 2011.
