Jan. 16: Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hello and welcome to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day edition of "The Daily Five," a rundown of things to know or do in the community.

1. MLK Day: Civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s protest of racial inequality and discrimination throughout the turbulent 50s and 60s helped establish the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the end of Jim Crow. He would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on Jan. 15 had he not been assassinated by James Earl Ray in 1968.

2. Weather: Mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Calm wind becoming south between 12 and 15 mph.

3. Closures: All schools, libraries, post office locations, town and village offices, and banks will be closed and will run on a .

4. Garbage Pickup: There will be no garbage pickup in and the town garbage pickup is pushed back a day.

5. End Child Hunger: The Suffolk YJCC in Commack will host an interfaith service to end child hunger from 2-3:30 p.m. in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and to kick off a community garden and lobbying initiative in support of the cause.
