Huntington Notebook: FEMA Assistance Van at Town Hall

News and notes from the Town of Huntington.

Update: change in hours:

The hours have been revised. They are until 7 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

FEMA Assistance Van at Town Hall Sunday, Monday

A FEMA Individual Assistance Van will be at Huntington Town Hall on Sunday and Monday to offer advice and help homeowners determine if they are eligible for Hurricane Sandy disaster assistance.

The van will be at the Jackson Avenue side of Town Hall, which is located at 100 Main Street, Huntington, until 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

FEMA’s website defines disaster assistance as “financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. It is meant to help you with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. This assistance is not intended to restore your damaged property to its condition before the disaster.”

FEMA suggests that before visiting the van, homeowners visit the website www.disasterassistance.gov to learn about the various types of aid available and basic eligibility guidelines.

Village Green Shelter Closes

The shelter for residents affected by Hurricane Sandy at Village Green Senior Center is closed as of Saturday. The closure was a result of a dramatic drop in the number of individuals using the shelter, according to the Town. The eight warming centers operated by a coalition of the Town, social services agencies and local houses of worship, will remain open.

Veterans Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony Cancelled

The Town's Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony originally scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled.

Coming Up

The Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Town Hall.

The Zoning Board of Appeals will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Town Hall.

A date has not yet been set for the Town Board meeting this week. The Town budget will be discussed at the meeting.
