Huntington Notebook: Winter Farmers Market Opens

News and notes from the Town of Huntington.

New Location for Huntington Winter Farmers Market

The Huntington Winter Farmers Market open at Jack Abrams School on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will run every Sunday through April 28. The market previously operated at Sweet Hollow Hall at West Hills County Park in Melville.

The market will feature local and organic produce from four Long Island farms using season extension and hydroponic growing techniques as well as vendors with local artisanal breads, cheese, dairy products, fresh pasta and other items.

Cooking demonstrations, talks by local authors, and other presentations will be a feature of the G&G winter market. A cooking demonstration by Derrick Prince from Fox’s Master Chef Season Two is already lined up though the date is pending.

“It is going to be a wonderful season full of new beginnings,” said Lona Graepel, market organizer. “With many of the vendors sourcing ingredients from the New York region this is good news for local producers as well as the community.”

Graepe said the school offers many amenities, including a much larger space than the Sweet Hollow Hall location. “The school is easy to get to, bright, large and well maintained. This weekly event will be located right in the gymnasium; a space that will allow the market to grow significantly and easily accommodate craft tables for children, live music by local musicians, and a place for the whole community to reconnect in a family-friendly atmosphere, while at the same time support local farmers and budding local entrepreneurs.”

Graepel said the market was guided to the location by Joan Cergol, executive director of the Economic Development Corporation and to Superintendent James W. Polansky.
