Homemade, Locally-Sourced Breakfast and Lunch on The Menu At Cook's

Craving something homemade? Head over to Cook's Scratch Kitchen & Bakery for all-day breakfast and lunch options sourced from local and organic purveyors.

The name says it all at Cook's. Brother's Josh and Dave Cook, of Plainview, teamed up with Huntington area chef Stacey Schulz-McDevitt in April to create a destination for fresh, made-from-scratch breakfast and lunch served in a relaxed atmosphere.

Located at 1014 Fort Salonga Road in Northport, Cook's makes all doughs and batters, pickles, and saurkraut in-house, and roasts their own turkeys and chickens for lunch. They source organic eggs from Raleigh's Poultry Farm in Kings Park, tea from Clipper Ship Tea Company in Northport, and coffee from Hampton Coffee Company.

"I've been in the business for about 15 years now," said Josh Cook. "I've worked at a variety of high-end and low-end places throughout Long Island and real made-from-scratch food always appealed to me."

Chef Stacey Schulz-McDevitt has been cooking for 20 years and worked in the kitchens of the original Meehan's in Greenlawn, The Seminary in Lloyd Harbor, Pasta Viola in Stony Brook, and Mariner's Inn in Northport before moving west and opening restaurants in Scottsdale, Ariz. and Nappa, Calif. with her husband.

Since returning to her home turf, Schulz-McDevitt is happy to put in the extra work it takes to serve made-from-scratch cooking, even if it means not being able to offer everything under the sun.

"We try to make everything in house that we can," she said, "and the menu's not huge because of that. We're trying to do what we do really well."

The menu at Cook's is by no means small, however, and the cafe frequently advertises daily specials. If you are breakfast fan, get your fill with pancakes, waffles, french toast or omelets all day long. For lunch enjoy one of their many signature sandwiches, wraps, or salads. Take-out dinners are also available.

Some of the popular selections at Cook's are the "donut muffin," a pastry made with fresh grated nutmeg rolled in cinnamon sugar; the egg white wrap with roasted red peppers, homemade chicken apple sausage, and spinach; and "The Hipster," house-cured smoked pork, gruyere, Cook's local brewery stout mustard, and fennel kraut on grilled sourdough bread.

Cook's also offers desserts, take-out dinners, and catering services.

Thursday, Cook's received an official welcome from the Northport Chamber of Commerce. Cook's has already won some loyal fans and the cozy cafe was packed full of diners enjoying pastries, salads, sandwiches, and a slice of cake made for the occasion.

Cook's is open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. See a full menu and hours on their website www.cookskitchenny.com.
