Fort Salonga Still Without Power

Residents Wednesday still reeling from the aftermath of Irene.

Fort Salonga is still feeling the aftermath from Hurricane Irene. While most of Northport has power restored, as of Wednesday morning the power is out in much of Fort Salonga.

LIPA is reporting that 879 customers are still without power since the storm hit on Sunday evening in Fort Salonga. When power is returned to these affected customers is still unknown.

As of 4:30 p.m. intersection of Bread and Cheese Hollow Road and Fort Salonga has a blinking yellow traffic light, an improvement from the morning when there was no power.

The Chase Bank located on the corner of Fort Salonga and Bread and Cheese Hollow Road has been running on a generator since the storm swept through the town on Sunday. A Suffolk County Police car was parked at the adjacent Shell station while the intersection is still out of order.

Dan, resident of Fort Salonga, said he’s been without power since Sunday and has been running his refrigerator on a generator to keep the food from spoiling.

Neighbor Albert Lopez is in more desperate need of a return to normalcy in Fort Salonga. According to his daughter, Maria Lopez, her father requires oxygen and a nebulizer for a lung condition.

“He’s 88 years old,” Maria said. “We’ve been without power since Monday. LIPA was here but we’re still waiting for power back.”
