Fire At The Thatched Cottage

Fire in laundry room late Tuesday night.

It was a close call for the Thatched Cottage in Centerport Tuesday night. Literally.

The Centerport Fire Department, located next door, responded to a call at 11:52 p.m. to put out a pile of linens and rags that had caught fire and in the laundry room.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke filling the building after the sprinkler system extinguished the flames. They doused and overhauled the room, and used fans to clear the smoke.

The fire damage was confined to the laundry room and contents. About 40 Centerport firefighters were on the scene with two engines, a ladder truck, heavy rescue truck, and two ambulances. The Greenlawn Fire Department assisted with an additional engine and crew.

The fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal.
