E. Northport Street Left Unplowed Two Days After Blizzard

With the Town nowhere to be found, residents take matters into their own hands

It was clear to the residents of Salisbury Drive, a cul-de-sac in East Northport, that they would have to take matters into their own hands after their street was left unplowed by the Town of Huntington two days after the blizzard.

Sunday morning neighbors banded together with shovels and snow blowers to tackle the two feet of snow caked across their street. Resident Nicole Repetti said her husband, a member of the NYPD Dept of Emergency Services, couldn't afford to miss another day of work.

"I understand getting to the main roads first," she wrote, "but overnight (or this morning) I would have expected the road to be plowed. God forbid there was an emergency, help would not reach us. Unacceptable!"

If your road has not been plowed, call the Highway Hotline at 499-0444.

What was your experience with the storm? How do you rate the Town's response? Tell us in the comments below.

We too live in East Northport and these landscapers that the town contracts are not able to do the job correctly. There is absolutely no reason especially in a cul-de-sac to block in anyone's driveway and leave 8 feet on each side of the road un-plowed. Our roads are horrible. The Sunken Meadow Pkwy was a mess last night so bad that the west exit to Pulaski heading North was so bad that upon exiting we got stuck at Midnight. After 45 minutes and 2 great people to help, we finally got out. On the South bound side a woman was stuck and 3 plows just drove right past her without even asking if she needed help. All they had to do was use the plows to remove some snow and throw some sand down. This is our Town of Huntington taxes at work for us.

Keep calling the town of Huntington if your street has not yet been plowed....If you are unhappy with the work that "these landscapers" do then go get a plow and see if you could do a better job!...Also, if people would stay off the roads (unless they need to go to work or are emergency vehicles) then the streets would probably look much better as well.
Debbie Moran February 10, 2013 at 09:34 pm
I agree with MB...stay off the streets, you are not helping by going out and getting stuck. If you have a plow on your truck, go out and get people to pitch in for gas and plow some streets. There are only so many workers and they DO need to sleep at some point also--even though they are happy to get the overtime pay!

You should have bought a Subaru instead of the "wannabe" Mercedes.

Dean, I don't think the Town of Huntington is responsible for State roads ie Sunken Meadow Parkway, that's the Governor's watch. It would also be helpful if private contractors would not plow out a customer's driveway and leave the snow in the roadway. This was a record snowfall, many of the town's contractors equipment was not heavy enough to handle the volume of snow. Hopefully the Town Highway Department will be able to dig us all out soon; in the mean time pitching in to help a neighbor, especially our seniors, would be the honorable thing to do.

we have one lane in the middle of all the roads plowed and as a result all the driveways are about 6 to 8 feet extra to shovel and when and if a plow comes thru again.. they better clear it in a manor so that all the work the people did to get some of the road open is not tossed back into our driveways. Cars are getting stuck and turning at the corners is a joke. I have not driven except to the end of the street to park my car in the bank parking lot so I could dig out my driveway, but that short distance was hard for even a subaru to get thru and the road is a sheet of ice nothing has been put down on it. Not acceptable.

The dead end portion of Ellis ave in crab meadow has not be plowed either. No plows have been through since Friday around 5pm. Neighbors have cleared a path with the snowblower, but there have not been any plows. When I called the highway dept. a message comes on that the mailbox is full. I don't plan on going anywhere, but if there was an emergency they could not get threw to us. Several people I have spoken to have similar situations.

Unfortunately, because we often rely on pick-up truck plows, I think this snow is just too much for many of who would normally help. A friend of mine just posted a picture of two large plows in front of her house....stuck. These were not even the smaller trucks that I usually see.

I have a plow for private use and don't feel it's my responsibility to plow town streets. I was out plowing Friday night into Saturday morning and didn't see one Town Of Huntington plow truck in all of East Northport from 10pm till i finally went in at 1am. It seems being the first substantial snowfall of this season that the T.O.H. would have had plenty of money in their budget for snow removal. Where was all the necessary manpower to effectively plow this storm as it unfolded?

There must be no TOH Highway Dept. employees living on that block
Francesca Cioffi February 11, 2013 at 11:35 am
It's disgraceful that I pay these kinds if taxes and receive subpar service.
Francesca Cioffi February 11, 2013 at 11:36 am
Now I look out to see they plowed me in as I have to leave for work.

Reading those facebook posts on Huntington Patch is amazing. It speaks to the utter indifference and staggering arrogance that Naughton, his son and his family have for his constituents, considering he was basically hired as Super for life and will leave when he wants to. Having said that, I challenge the Staff of Patch to explore this story further. You are the media. You look a lot like the press. How about acting like it - do some interviews and investigate this story. Instead of looking like an electronic bulletin board or that idiotic non-story regarding gay athletes, THIS is something that has a life threatening effect on TOH Residents. ALL OF YOU PLEASE RECALL that not that long ago Petrone sought to eliminate the elected position, and make the Hwy Super a title answerable to the Town, and the fight was huge. Many carried Naughtons water for him and posted here, at meetings, etc. Not happy with the roads? OK, then fire Naughton. Oh, wait. YOU CAN'T. Hopefully, we dont get anymore Nemo's or Sandy's until you all wake up and vote him out. This is chickens coming home to roost for many TOH Residents. No doubt that opinions vary about the Board and Supervisor, but they have been and will continue to be answerable to the voter. Naughton is the J Edgar Hoover of the Town and as long as he gets those same few hundred voters he will continue to express his indifference to the public. Oh well - You can look at the sawhorses and trucks and see his name painted all over them.

The guys of Northport Village Highway done did it and got-r-done ! Thanks !

It would be interesting to learn if "Bob" is a member of the opposition candidate's team. I challenge "Bob" in this age of transparency to disclose his last name. No one is happy with the conditions of the roads. I would like to know when the Highway Superintendent requested the heavy duty equipment from the State and when Petrone made the request. I would also like to know why our Governor gave this equipment to NJ and CT before Long Island. How could Bellone allow the Suffolk portion of the LIE to become a parking lot?

Bob,
Seems a little harsh. Bill has been serving this town for many years. For those that remember Ken Butterfield we can all attest to how good of o Bill has done with an ever decreasing percentage of the budget. I will grant you this, the response to this storm has been an epic fail. I am sure both Frank and Bill will be slinging plenty of mud after this. Neither of whom would be correct. They both should be ashamed in heir lack of planning and their poor communication following the storm. It truly is time for both to go but that's what elections are for.

Karl... We live in northport and our road was not plowed until late Sunday morning.... Terrible job...
karl February 11, 2013 at 03:49 pm
Sorry to hear about that John, but looking at other places still left undone we are in pretty good shape here in the village of Northport. But if you had a date on Saturday night or hoping to head to church Sunday morning I guess you would have been frustrated with the biggest snow fall since '78. I'd call the Mayor and see whats up with your block !

Hi Guys... I apologize if you think my criticism of Naughton is too harsh. He has done a poor job, and if he was a normal "employee", he could be held accountable by his employer. I know that it would be so much better for your comments if I stood for another candidate, but I do not. I have no opinion about McKay, and in this context, of Petrone or the Board. If what you say is true - that McKay was going to be a patronage appointment, then I am against that as well. I dont like Naughton's arrogance (including his name on everything) in how he runs his department. I do not like the fact that he can thumb his nose at the residents of the TOH because he is elected and not hired. I do not like the fact that it appears that his son is now the Hwy mouthpiece, furthering the nepotism in this dept. I don't like the idea that months will go by before anyone can even consider replacing him, and voters have short memories. This is what I want: a well qualified manager that can be fired for cause if he displays negligence or indifference to his job. In this case, we are talking about the potential for life threatening hazards because of this awful job. Also, if you embrace Naughton's elected status, then your criticism of the Board, Patrone, the Governor and anyone else is nonsensical. Naughton is the elected leader of Hwy and the buck stops with him. The attempt to change that was thwarted by those above commenters. You cant have it both ways. Oh, and my last name is Roberts.

The hotline is eternally busy...
I just tried to make my way to the east northport library...all roads that lead in are atrocious! Does not look like they were plowed once.
