Tell Us: Breast Cancer Research Fundraising

Do you know where your donations go?

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close next week, a significant portion of the $6 billion raised annually in the name of fighting the disease will have been raised through events across Long Island and the country.

A 2011 Marie Claire article raises the question of how trustworthy the fundraisers are (including businesses using the pink ribbon to promote possibly carcinogenic products like fast food).

And The Washington Post reported Oct. 18 that the New York attorney general announced that the two largest breast cancer charities have established guidelines for fuller disclosure by those selling pink products and services in their names.

Adopted by Susan G. Komen For The Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the guidelines include having companies disclose the amount that will be donated from each purchase. Companies using pink ribbons and similar symbols on products also are expected to state if a purchase triggers a donation or merely calls attention to the cause.

Do you believe efforts to raise money in the fight against breast cancer - or any cancer - are appropriately focused?

Tell us why or why not in the comments section.

It would be nice if companies even came close to raising that much money and awareness for prostate cancer during Sept. which is prostate cancer awareness month. There are no "blue-ribboned" products or campaigns at all. 1 man dies every 18 minutes from the disease. 17% will get this disease- 1 in 6 men. Why doesn't this author do an article about the void of campaigns for awareness for men's health? Why doesn't the author do a report about how Obamacare discriminates against men's health and in just one example doesn't pay for prostate cancer screenings but does for breast cancer ones? It also denies men well-care visits if they can't afford them but allows all women free access to them? I guess this author focuses exclusively on women's health.

Howie sir: Because MEN do not count in a Woman's world. Have you ever heard of Men's Studies Class ANYWHERE? How about MALE Reproductive Rights? All we ever hear is How WOMAN blame MEN for the WOMAN"S BAD CHOICES THEY MAKE. If woman don't like what I just said above, then go and squish your own dam spiders. As per any Cancer, I bet you with all the Illegal Dumping that goes on here on Long Island everyday, That has something to do with it.
