'Good Boys and True' Opens This Weekend

A sex scandal at a prestigious prep school spirals out of control in the Bare Bones Theater Company's latest production.

The good news for the and fans of hard-hitting, edgy drama is that the theatrical group’s production of Good Boys and True opens this weekend. What could be bad news for some theatergoers is that tickets are going fast, and the first two performances are already sold-out.

The show is creating quite a buzz and for good reason. It’s the Long Island premiere of a work of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who’s made quite a name for himself in television and theater.

Aguirre-Sacasa, who worked on HBO’s Big Love, recently signed on as co-producer of the hit TV series Glee. He also helped rework the script for the floundering Broadway musical Spiderman- Turn Off The Dark.

In Good Boys and True, the action revolves around Brandon Hardy, a student at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School. Ivy School-bound Brandon seems to hold all the cards for an extraordinarily bright future: he’s good-looking, self-confident, and a star both academically and athletically.

Yet the silver spoon in his mouth begins to tarnish when a videotape of an explicit sexual encounter between two young people surfaces. This discovery will eventually rock Brandon’s cloistered world and the lives of those around him.

While the play is set in the less media-savvy world of the 1980s--in the days before Facebook, Twitter, cell phones, and You Tube-- the moral dilemmas explored by the storyline remain as compelling as ever, said Director Jeff Bennett.

“It’s gripping. It creeps up on you, and it resonates,” Bennett said, adding that theatergoers will be sifting through these issues long afterwards.

Headling what Bennett calls “a jewel of a cast” is Greg Cappello as Brandon, the popular, polished prep school student who falls from grace.

Aimee Berlin plays Elizabeth Hardy, the mother whose own dark secrets are eventually brought to light after she is blindsided by this emotional fender bender.

Lara Hunter, whom many may remember for her tour de force performance as Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire,  plays Elizabeth’s comical sister, Mady, once again demonstrating her immense emotional range.

Shawn Frank plays Brandon’s best friend, Justin, who is perhaps the show's "quirkiest, offbeat character," Bennett said, adding that the  scenes between Justin and Brandon are simply “electric.”

Mike Ogle plays Coach Shea. The scene in which he tells Elizabeth about his discovery of the sex tape is particularly realistic.

The performance of Meghan Tello as Cheryl, a girl from the other side of the tracks, is a telling statement about victimization and the pratfalls of privilege.

The play was produced by Alex Edwards Bourdrez.

Performances take place at the , 57 Main Street, Northport Village.  As of this writing, tickets are still available for 8 p.m. performances on Aug. 19 and 20, and 7 p.m. performances on Aug. 14 and 21. Tickets can be purchased online through Brown Paper Tickets or by calling 1-800-838-3006. For more information, visit www.barebonestheater.com/goodboys.
