In 2010, after a hiatus of more than thirty years from writing, Intonato found himself at the exclusive Bulgari Hotel in Indonesia on business.  Sitting across his breakfast table one morning was an unexpected guest, a large male macaque.

The character of Dante, the Monkey King, was inspired by him. The other characters “just showed up” while Intonato wrote, frequently between 2am-6am, while in Bali.

SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY:

On New Year’s Eve, accountant Rupert Marlowe not only embezzles money from his boss, he runs away to Bali with the boss’ daughter, Diane, for one last fling.  A few days later, a half man/half monkey devil and a hit man show up for breakfast at his villa. Now it’s payback time.  A dark thriller/comedy, The Monkey King is meant for mature audiences only.

It is difficult for me to come up with one word to describe the experience after seeing The Monkey King. The only phrase that seems to do it justice is well-done. It was a well-done production. The superb talent of each actor made the show. The sparse décor, of the small space, filled the room without extravagant designs or elaborate displays. The placement of each item, the quality, color and size of each piece was, precisely what was needed to create the look and feel that the play craved. A huge well-done to the set designer.
A believable story set on fire as soon as The Monkey King entered the stage! Each actor perfectly played his or her role. The casting was spot on. Enjoyable, entertaining, funny & outlandish. Kudos to all involved! - The Accountant & Diane

The Monkey King is the brilliant waltz of one man's imagination, that of playwright/ director Don Intonato. I found it to be stunningly original in terms of plot and characterization. Long reign the Monkey King and its superb cast!
