What Northporter Made a Difference in 2012?

Nominate your Northport neighbors for Patch's list of people who mattered this year.

Northport is filled with special people who make a difference, people who make an impact on our lives on a regular, sometimes daily, basis.

There are teachers, business owners, volunteers, public officials, clergy members.

Northport Patch is compiling a list of 10 local people who mattered in 2012. We need your help. See last year's top ten here.

Nominate candidates in the comment section below, tweet@NptPatch or write on our Facebook page.

Please give us the person's name and the reason they belong on this list. Last year's greatest person of the year winner was local business man and community activist Artie Berke. Previous winners are not eligible this year.

The list will run the last week in December as part of our Year in Review series.

Dave Weber impressed me with his dedication and work ethic of running Seymour's Boatyard and organizing and donating his time to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Karen, After reading and watching the news piece on Andrea Miller, I agree she would be an excellent nominee.

Our next step is to put up a poll of nominees in another week. You can vote. And the debate can rage on then. In the mean time, any new nominees to consider?
Helene Schorr December 7, 2012 at 03:55 pm
I know I am biased, but my vote for a Norhport difference-maker is my 7 year old daugher Hallie. For her most recent birthday in October, she decided on her own to ask for donations to her favortie charies in lieu of presents. Thanks to our wonderful friends and family, Hallie ended up raising over $400. She decided to disseminate the donations to 3 different charities: her favorite cat shelter in East Northport, a cat shelter in Oceanside affected by Hurricane Sandy, and a cancer research fund. Thanks to Hallie, my husband and I have agreed to "pay it forward" and will now do the same for our birthdays. I am extremely proud of Hallie for not only making a positve difference in our lives every day, but for also caring so much about the world around her.

I feel that the staff at the east northport library should receive this honor.. During hurricane Sandy they were a safe haven for the whole community. Warmth, friends, coffee, entertainment for kids...They do many things for the town...help elderly...recycle...summer programs...help programs...they do it all..

Mayor George Doll!
Mary Silberstein December 10, 2012 at 12:04 pm
And why? He leads with true commitment to the residents of Northport and the Village. He is compassionate and understands the Villages needs.
Jason Molinet (Editor) December 10, 2012 at 02:35 pm
All Northport Village employees did yeomen's work during and after the storm. And everywhere I went I saw the Mayor. Hard-hit Asharoken sung his praises too.

Eric Alexander for his work on organizing clean ups for Sandy Victims all over the Island. The last one was 75 volunteers who were out on Friday, Saturday .They had an impact on Mastic Beach, Lindehurst and Long Beach.

I don't know his name, being new to the area, but I'm sure you all do- the owner of Nina's Restaurant. The way he worked to keep open after Sandy and to provide a sense of community, not to mention the warm food and warm welcome, was amazing. He went above and beyond.

Thank you MJS.

I believe the " Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang" at St Anthony of Padua's church in East Northport should be nominated. It is a group of parents and children that get together once a month to make peanut butter & jelly sandwiches which are then distributed to different homeless shelters on the Island. They had an emergency session after Hurricane Sandy and made 3000 sandwiches!!
Troop410 Northport December 13, 2012 at 12:01 am
We would like to nominate the Boy Scouts of Troop 410, Boy Scouts of America, Northport, NY.
Among other community activities in 2012, these Scouts, who range from grades 6-12: - ran two fundraisers for the Northport Food Pantry. In 2012, they raised over $5,300 from the Troop’s Jan. 1 Polar Bear Swim, and the Pancake Breakfast in March. ( PS – they’re looking for sponsors for the 2013 plunge – read about it here: http://northport.patch.com/events/2013-new-years-day-polar-bear-swim ) - performed community service in support of their sponsoring organization, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Northport on Main St., with activities such as snow shoveling and leaf raking. - participated in the Chamber of Commerce meter wrapping project, organized a night of entertainment for the residents of the Dawn Hill Adult Home, and ran a water station during the Great Cow Harbor Race. - initiated and completed individual-led Eagle Scout projects such as construction projects to help the Lewis Oliver Farm and Camp Alvernia, mural painting at Northport High School, construction of a flagpole at Veterans Memorial Park and a clean water storm drain protection program for Northport Harbor. The Scouts of Troop 410 work hard to follow the Scout Oath and Scout Law. They are the future leaders of our community and country, and we’d like to nominate them for “What Northporter Made a Difference in 2012?” - Troop 410 Leaders http://www.t410northportny.org

I would like to nominate Carol, owner of Just Dogs Gourmet in East Northport. This is a woman who changed careers to do what she loves. Carol is ALWAYS doing some type of fundraiser in her store to help animals in need. This woman is selfless and puts her heart into her business and customers. I'm pretty sure she makes just enough money to get by but it is very clear she is more than wealthy with love and support from her customers! Please consider this amazing lady as a Northporter that made a difference in 2012!

Charlotte Koons; after more than 35 years on Eaton's Neck as an educator and activist she is still helping the community --and world--in so many ways. One example is her volunteer work at Hospice House in E. Northport, which has become an extended family at Thanksgiving and other holidays.
plk December 14, 2012 at 04:34 pm
Also her activities with the Northport Arts Coalition

I'd like to Nominate Shelley Pierce. Not only is she a great friend, but devoted Northport Resident. During the hurricane, she opened her doors to my family and many others for hot showers, meals, movies on the couch & charging all devices. As a Realtor she is a light that brings new families to the area and helps those already Established here in Northport with relocation or upgrade. She is a devoted mother, an active PTA Mom as well as a Daisy Scout Leader. She is active in her church and teaches Sunday School and religion to the children of her Parish. If you have the pleasure of knowing her, you are such a lucky person. She is a true Northporter!
Heather Dubinsky December 18, 2012 at 01:28 am
I would like to nominate my baby sister in law - Amanda Dubinsky. She is the volunteer coordinator at the Hospice house in Enpt. Her dedication to her families in the community & her volunteers is done with such beauty & grace ~ her gentle tone & honest smile... Make me proud to call her family.
