Congressman Israel Calls on Republicans to Find Middle Ground After Shutdown
After Congress voted Wednesday night to end a 16-day government shutdown, Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) spoke on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, calling on Republicans to find a middle ground on the country’s budgetary issues. 

“I think there’s an unquenchable thirst in this country for finding the middle ground. People have had it with defunding and delaying and repealing and moving backwards,” he said, adding that he is looking forward to a debate with Republicans on things like Medicare, jobs, immigration and balancing budgets responsibly.

Huntington Hospital Wins State Funds

Several Long Island hospitals, including Huntington, have been awarded state funds to help train physician researchers working on clinical projects.

The projects range from kidney disease genomics to malaria prevention. Huntington Hospital's research focuses on improving the quality of care for vulnerable elderly patients, Renee Pekmezaris the project director.

Northport Soccer Tourney Draws Crowds, Cosmos Players
Soccer came to town this past weekend in Northport as the northeast's largest soccer tournament set up residence throughout Northport and Huntington drawing teams from around the region and even some Cosmo greats who were on hand for autograph signing.

This was the second year the Northport Cow Harbor United Soccer Club teamed up with the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund to raise awareness among the youth in the program and to donate money to breast cancer research.

Review Set on Impact of U.S. Government Shutdown
The Town Board voted Tuesday night to ask the comptroller and town attorney to assess the financial impact the federal government shutdown and possible default.

After a short debate, the board voted 3-2 for the review; Councilmen Mark Mayoka and Gene Cook voted against it. Town Supervisor Frank Petrone urged the review, saying the town is owed millions of dollars from FEMA for Sandy and other costs.

Northport Tops Hills East, 40-20
Northport football topped Half Hollow Hills East Saturday 40-20 in a game that saw them leading from start.

Quarterback Connor Quinn went 5 for 9 with 85 yards passing. Fullback James Gerdvil picked up 118 yards rushing, including one 55-yard touchdown run.
