Tell Us: What Should be Done About Northport Flooding?

With heavy rains expected again, flooding follows.

The National Weather Service has once again issued a flood watch for the Northport area effective through Saturday morning.

With heavy rainfall seemingly every other day this month it can seem like a boat may be the best investment to cruise the Main Street "river," as cars are regularly seen stranded in water a foot deep or more.

Northport Police often close Woodbine and lower Main when flooding gets bad which may prohibit residents from getting to or leaving their homes. Many shop owners also feel the impact as the water encroaches into their storefronts, leaching money for cleanup and prevention.

Perhaps the most devastating impact of the flooding problem in downtown Northport is all the runoff dumped into the Harbor, bringing with it contaminants that negatively affect the environment.

Catch basins and drywells were installed around the village several years ago but the system can only handle so much before things get out of hand.

Tell us, how do you think Northport can better deal with its flooding problem?
