Northport American Legion Unveils Restored Building

Updates include an elevator for better access.

The Northport American Legion Post 694 unveiled its new look Thursday, which includes an elevator and other building updates.

The Post was built in the 1950s after veterans came home from serving in war. However, the building had seen few improvements since its inception. As the veterans grew older, the need for a better facility, especially a more accessible one, became apparent.

Construction began in July on the $1.17 million renovation, which added an elevator, updated air-conditioning system, wiring and bathroom updates. The cost of the project was covered by federal grant money, secured by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington), and a community development block grant from the Town of Huntington.
