Monday, Jan. 17: Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.

A roundup of things to do and know today.

Today is a federal holiday to honor the birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. King's birthday was actually Jan .15, but the holiday is always held on the third Monday of January. 
  2. All local schools are closed, as are government offices, post offices and libraries. 
  3. There will be no garbage pickup in Northport Village and the town garbage pickup is pushed back a day.
  4. The Long Island Rail Road is adding extra trains for the  holiday.
  5. The Cinema Arts Centre will screen a seven-part film takes viewers on a journey from the start of apartheid to the triumphant overthrow of South Africa’s racist system. See more info here
