Hidden Northport: Canoe with a Past

Itself a secret, Scudder Beach has another mystery hidden in the rafters of its pavilion.

Call it hidden Northport. It doesn’t get much more secluded than Scudder Park.

It also doesn’t get much more scenic.

Tucked away on a quiet side street off Woodbine Ave., Scudder Park is where locals in the know go for a quiet moment or to sip that morning coffee with a vista of the entire harbor.

Every magical spot has its own charm and mystery. Scudder’s?

Simply look up. Concealed in the ceiling beams of the picnic pavilion sits a canoe.

And not just any canoe. It pays tribute to well-known Northporter Freddy Piercey, who died in December 2011. His canoe was a fixture in the waters around Northport Harbor until he died at 68.

So look up next time you visit Scudder Park. That red canoe has a mysterious past all its own.
