The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers, sponsors and teams for the 4th Annual in Northport-East Northport. will be hosting the 4th Annual Relay for Life on June 2-3, 2012 and is encouraging all interested participants to attend the Relay Community Kickoff in the High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. on February 15, 2012.
Relay for Life is an amazing overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from the community will gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to honor those who are currently battling this disease. Participants help raise funds and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its life saving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. The funds raised saves lives by funding cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services.
“Relay For Life raises awareness about the progress against cancer as much as it is a fundraiser,” said Dawn Tropeano, Director of Distinguished Events for the American Cancer Society in Suffolk County. “Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event, as a volunteer or participant, have made a commitment to fight back against this disease and let the community know that each of us can make a difference.”
During Relay for Life, teams of students, parents, and community members will gather at Northport High School’s track field and take turns walking or running laps for 12 hours rain or shine. The event is held from 6PM to 6AM to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps. Relay for Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, community groups ... people from all walks of life. Northport’s Relays to date have raised more than $520,000 and included over 1,500 participants throughout each event! Last year’s Relay for Life earned honors as the 5th largest event in the Eastern Division!
Highlighting the evening is the Luminaria Ceremony, held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. Hundreds of luminaria will line the track and will be left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. In addition, musical groups, dance troupes, and midnight madness will ensure that everyone is entertained throughout the entire Relay.
We ask that you take up the cause by joining our Relay for Life event! Your involvement can save lives. Relay for Life unites communities everywhere, and we need your support to make this a heart-warming, fun-filled and meaningful event. Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way.
