Raia: An Eventful and Productive Week in Albany

Assemblyman Raia recaps the latest week in Albany.

Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) was recently appointed to the General Budget Conference Committee on Health. Raia will attend budget hearings as a representative of the Assembly Minority Conference.

“I appreciate the confidence my conference has in my abilities to represent them during the Health Committee’s budget hearings,” said Raia. “I am ready for spirited testimony and look forward to meeting with the constituents and organizations that will be attending these hearings here in Albany.”

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 was an eventful night at our State Capitol. The House brought a variety of bills to the floor, including two legislative redistricting measures and expansion of the DNA database in New York State.

The Assemblyman voted in favor of both redistricting bills and the legislation to expand the DNA database.

“Voting yes to the constitutional amendment is a vote to ensure a fairer redistricting process for the voters of New York State,” said Raia. “The DNA database is a major step forward for our law enforcement. Currently, the law requires only defendants convicted of felonies or certain violent misdemeanors to supply DNA samples. Now the law will require felons and more misdemeanor offenders to supply DNA samples to the database. Expanding the database will give our law enforcement teams much-needed help in solving cold cases.”

The Assemblyman noted that while it was a late night here in Albany, members of the Legislature completed everything they set forth to accomplish. Now the focus goes toward delivering a fiscally-sound and on-time budget.
