An Insiders Look at TFCU

By Meghan Weber

I obtained my internship at Teacher’s Federal Credit Union through the Academy of Finance program at Northport High School. The Academy of Finance, run by Ms. Allison Schwabish, provides every student in the program with an internship that must be completed throughout the summer in between the student’s junior and senior year.

I began my internship in the beginning of July; so far in the time I have spent with Teacher’s Federal Credit Union I have seen the marketing department at Corporate Headquarters and I have learned about the duties of marketing using social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and email.

I saw that by embracing social media, TFCU is able to quickly identify what works with their members, and what needs improvement. Social Media allows TFCU to see the criticism and the praise and with that information, be adaptive to their member's needs. I saw what work needed to be done in order to put a message out there and make people become interested in what TFCU is saying.

I also had the opportunity to spend several weeks at the Commack branch. In Commack, I observed the duties of the tellers and the duties in the platform at Member Services. I learned how meticulous tellers must be to prevent any errors from occurring. While observing on the platform I saw firsthand the process it takes to apply for loans and I saw what measures were taken to ensure member’s security involving the safety of debit cards and account activity.

Before this experience I had no knowledge about the behind the scenes work at credit unions. I am now able to see and understand more of the process it takes to open an account, apply for car loans, home loans and personal loans. I learned how important it is to have a good credit score and how it can affect your future.

In the next few weeks I will be working at the Corporate Headquarters to learn more about TFCU.  I will be working in the marketing department, the call center and I will observe a training session. I hope to learn about the behind the scenes of the company and what makes TFCU successful.
