Mr Fusaro is right to cite the Triborough Amendment as one of the most unnecessary, and cost-creating, impediments for NY school districts, and Mr Ciccone was wise to address the need for greater efficiencies. Albany, over the past few decades, has continued to increase costs for districts, with more and more mandates that are either …   more ›

Elwood BOE Gives Final Budget Presentation Before Vote

Public participation was minimal at Elwood's budget hearing; 2.12 percent tax levy is within the state's guidelines.

In contrast to last year's contentious budget process, the Elwood Board of Education's May 3 budget hearing was a low-key event. Assistant Superintendent of Business Bill Pastore gave a recap of the $54.6 million budget, which represents a .83 percent increase over 2011-2012. The 2.12 percent tax levy equates to an estimated tax rate of 3.31 percent. A PDF of the budget newsletter is attached to this article. The 2.12 percent levy is within the new state tax cap guidelines. In comparison, 17 districts in Nassau and Suffolk County have chosen to pierce, or exceed, the cap. Approval requires a super vote of 60 percent. The average budget-to-budget increase in Elwood since 2004-2005 was 6.02 percent and the average tax levy increase was 6.39 …

Romney leads the field with 685 delegates, more than halfway to the 1,144 needed to wrap up the presidential nomination, according to The New York Times.   The latest Quinnipiac poll has Romney leading in New York with 54 percent of those …

As Gas Prices Rise, Congressional Candidates Weigh in on Solutions

Gasoline now topping $4 per gallon in Huntington.

With gas prices now more than $4 per gallon and expected to rise on Long Island, 2nd Congressional District candidates remain at odds on the causes and solutions to the problem. At a Huntington press conference Tuesday, Patch asked Rep. Steve Israel about the skyrocketing gas prices and the reasoning behind his pro-environment, anti-drilling voting record as a member of the House of Representatives. Israel said he is leading the fight to end the practice to subsidize big oil companies when oil companies are making record-breaking profits. The top five oil companies in America made $137 billion in profits, with profits up 75 percent, according to Israel. "Why are House Republicans insisting that Americans keep digging into their pockets to …
