Town Notebook: Arts Funding Restored

Town residents named Intel finalists; recreation system upgrade.

Arts funding restored

The Town Board voted to restore 90 percent of the cuts in funding for arts programs. The funds were reclaimed after insurance costs came in far lower than originally projected, the town said.  At the same time, the board rejected restoration of funding for several youth and non-profit organizations.

The board also:

  • Approved the historic designation of the Old Half Hollow Schoolhouse at 5 Seaman Neck Road in Dix Hills.
  • Approved a 10-year license to La Casa Café Inc. to continue to operate a restaurant and snack bar at Crab Meadow Beach.
  • Scheduled a public hearing for Feb. 6  on a proposed revision to Town code instituting new procedures on applications, renewals and revocations of accessory apartment permits.
  • Scheduled a Feb. 6 public hearing to consider acquiring a 0.38-acre parcel on Clay Pitts Road in East Northport for an extension of William Byrne Park, allowing for expanded parking and the construction of restrooms.

Recreation system offline

Because of a systems upgrade, the town Parks and Recreation office will be unable to process payments and registrations between Monday and Wednesday.

Credit cards cannot be accepted at Dix Hills Ice Rink with the exception of the public ice skating sessions, cash or check only for all other services.

Students named Intel semifinalists

Students from Half Hollow Hills, Commack, Huntington and St. Anthony's were named semifinalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search.

Change in trash schedule

Because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, there is no scheduled trash pickup on Monday. All pickups are pushed back one day through the week and recycling of paper and cardboard for everyone is moved to Thursday.

Family game center opens

The Station Sports Family Fun Center has opened, taking the space previously occupied by the town's day laborer site. The EDC and other town supported the plan to bring new business to Huntington Station.

Author honored by Town Board

Author Magnus Walsh was honored by the Town Board this week for the publication of his first book titled Five O'Clock and All's Well, a collection of nonfiction short stories centered around real-life experiences in Huntington.

Congratulations to the talented young people who have been named semi-finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search. As a resident of Northport, I can't help but wonder why our school district isn't producing more semi-finalists. Sure, we've had a few here and there but never consistently like the Kings Park school district. They must have at least 2 to 3 students selected EVERY YEAR! Why can't our district find a science teacher and/or mentors who can guide NPT/ENPT students in researching and documenting their own groundbreaking scientific research? Do we not place a premium on independent study? It's discouraging to say the least and it shortchanges some of the really bright and innovative minds that exist in the Northport school system.
